Exhibition and Live Auction: 6 – 10 November 2009 Well-known and emerging New Zealand artists are lining up to offer their works to Richmond Road School’s hugely popular ARt With LoVe auction. The annual fundraising event – this year called The 5th Flirtation – is being held at the school on Tuesday, 10 November, at 7pm, with ART + OBJECT auctioneers Ben Plumbly and James Parkinson once again in charge. The event, which featured on TV One’s Auction House earlier in the year, provides a unique opportunity to purchase works by leading artists at exceptional prices while also raising much-needed funds for the school. This year, about 40 paintings, photographs, sculptures and objet d’art, will go under the hammer from artists such as Billy Apple, Jacqueline Fahey, Denys Watkins, Vivien Masters, Garth Steeper, Jacqueline Fraser, Dick Frizzell, Otis Frizzell, Geoffrey Heath, Sarah Hillary, Harvey Benge, Grant Sheehan and Gary Freemantle. Parents at the school are well-represented too with Karl Maughan, John Reynolds, Clinton Phillips, Dave Hood, Robyn Walton, Catherine Carter and Sam Miller-Walters all providing works. Other artists who have contributed include Mike Whitaker, Deborah Smith, Jennifer Smith, Robyn Hoonhout, Fern Petrie, Guity Evelyn, Michael Linane, Lucy Linanae, John Meadows, Trish Campbell, Anne Lengauer, Yona Lee, Basia Smolnicki, Jan Simmons, Caroline Low, Dylan Horrocks and Casey O’Connell, who won this year’s National Drawing Award. “ARt with LoVe is a very important fundraiser for us,” says Richmond Road School principal Stephanie Anich. “We have to raise $100,000 every year just to keep the school running so all the proceeds will be used to support our children’s learning and fostering their interest in the arts. “We are extremely fortunate to have so many passionate and talented New Zealand artists supporting our school and are very grateful for their involvement.”
The 5th Flirtation opens on Friday, 6 November, at 6.30pm at Richmond Road School (Douglas Street entrance). Free viewing takes place over the weekend of 7 and 8 November from 11am to 4pm, with the auction set for Tuesday, 10 November, at 7pm. |

The romance continues for one of Auckland’s most eagerly-awaited art auctions. ARt With LoVe - held at Richmond Road School in Ponsonby - is back for the 4th year in a row and, this time, viewers can also be voters. Dubbed "the 4th RoMANce", the event is a major fund-raiser for the inner-city school, giving buyers the chance to purchase works by the likes of Karl Maughan and Edith Amituanai in a relaxed environment with no dealer commission. Both artists have children at the school. Each year they, and other talented parents, friends and galleries donate artworks 100% “with love” and the proceeds are used to support children’s learning at the multi-lingual school. Professional auctioneers Ben Plumbly and James Parkinson – from ART + OBJECT – will once again conduct the auction, which starts at 6.30pm on Tuesday 11th November. Viewing begins on Friday, 7 November, and continues over election weekend so people voting at the school’s polling booth can also admire the artworks. Plumbly said he was delighted to be involved for the fourth year running. “It’s a great event - very successful and very well-organised. We love being involved in ARt with LoVe which has a great reputation throughout Auckland's visual arts community.” Principal Stephanie Anich said: “We have to raise $100,000 every year just to keep the school running so ARt with LoVe is a key event for us. Stephanie Anich - Principal Richmond Road School - Friday 7th November Art With Love is not like any other art exhibition or auction. It started in 2005, and was followed by the 2nd affair, the 3rd fling and now this event in 2008, the 4th Romance. It is called Art With Love because artists donate their work knowing that all the proceeds go to the school. This is a significant contribution. For this reason I would thank the artists who have contributed to this exhibition and auction. I would also like to specifically recognize the recent achievements of two artists who have children who attend Richmond Road School. John Reynolds and Edith Amatuanai were finalists in the recently awarded Walters Prize for contemporary art. Congratulations to you both on this significant achievement. As already mentioned John Reynolds has contributed significantly to Art With Love in the past, and Edith has donated two pieces to this, the 4th Romance. In addition to the artists, this event would not be possible without 2 other groups. Firstly I would like to thank our sponsors. Their support adds to the professional quality of this event. Please support them, and make them your first port of call when you can. Secondly our staff and parents who have helped make this event the success it is. I would particularly like to acknowledge Sue Winslow who was one of the founding organizers of this event, and whose experience we have drawn on extensively, and the 2008 organising committee consisting of the following parents – Stephen Fisher, Kim O’Loughlin, Robyn Walton, Julie Plourde, and our coordinator Angie TuiSamoa. The proceeds of this event are used to employ our wonderful teacher aides. We currently employ 6 teacher aides who support teachers by working with groups or individual children in our language programmes, or who provide remedial support for children in literacy and numeracy. We are also looking at ways in which we can further develop the art programmes for our children. We are certainly not short of talent in our community to tap into.
